Product demo videos quickly demonstrate technology that is often novel and sophisticated to gain confidence from stakeholders.

They can be used as part of the sales process and can be very effective during virtual sessions, when meeting in person is not viable.

EXPLAINER VIDEOS

What is an explainer video?

An explainer video is a short movie that often visually explains an idea or product. There are two main types of explainer videos:

  • Live action - records actual movement in real-time using film or video cameras
  • Animation - uses illustration, stop-motion, 2D or 3D graphics techniques.

Why do you need an explainer video?

You may need an explainer video to help explain your complex piece of tech, simplify your message, change perceptions of your service, convince investors or promote a charitable cause or theory.

People are usually in one of two stages in the 'buying journey' when they commission a video:

  1. Have a documented summary of their key message and who they are appealing to
  2. Unclear what their message is, why they are unique or who it is aimed at
(We can help clarify your message - see our consultancy section for more on this)

Which stage are you at? It's important to know because it has an impact on how long it takes to develop an explainer video and how successful it will be.

What are the different types and styles of explainer video?

When you have identified your target audience and what you need to tell them you are ready to think about the style. For example, a technical business buyer might prefer an informative 3D animation charity donors might resonate with an emotive cartoon. Here are some different types and styles to consider...

Type Style
2D animation  Illustration, Cartoons, Motion graphics, Whiteboard
3D animation  Computer-generated models (characters, objects and places)
Stop-motion  Physical objects, sculpted models, characters and places (paper, plasticine etc.)
Live-action  Physical objects, real people and places

Note: Screen recordings are typically used in tutorial videos used to demonstrate how to use software

What are the elements of an explainer video?

There are various types and styles of explainer videos, but they may share common components like...

  • Script - a written document describing the narrative
  • Storyboard - a sequence of images showing what is seen in the video
  • Dialogue spoken words that are heard in the form of interviews or narration (voice-over)
  • Music - sets the tone and pace of the video
  • Sound effects - accentuates key action and makes videos more immersive
  • Illustration - static images are foundational for 2D animation
  • Location/studio - the place where live-action video or sound is recorded
  • People - the participants in a production (presenter/actor/VO artist)
  • Design - images, graphics, characters and scenes need to be researched and aligned to a unified style

Tip: Explainer videos may look simple but good ones include a lot of moving parts that take skilled specialists time to produce

If you don't have time to learn these skills - or manage amateurs - consider using an experienced producer. Sound-Motive is an Oxford-based production company producing marketing videos for technology businesses in Oxfordshire and beyond. We have many years of experience which began with working for the BBC and ITV. You can see different examples of our videos on our work page. Need to cover or promote an in-person event with video? We have been up early to film breakfast club meetings and out late to cover summer drinks receptions. Your event is important to us, because it's important to you. Unlike pre-recorded video live events only happen once so it's important to get it right first time. It requires careful advance planning to have all the technology in operation when the magic happens. Don't learn the hard way use an experienced producer who knows how to avoid the pitfalls and make the most of the occasion. Sound Motive have covered live events across Oxfordshire and London at presitigous venues like the Ashmolean Museum, The Sheldonian Theatre, The Weston Library and Kings College London for organisations like the Oxfordshire Bioscience Network and The Oxfordshire Local Enterprise partnership.

Interviews and video testimonials

Interviews are often the basis for documentary videos, so knowing what questions to ask - and how to ask them - is really important. The role of the producer is to decide the most appropriate format or style that is used to compose the subject. For example these 'talking heads' can present directly to the camera or converse with an interviewer (who may - or may not - be visible).

Video testimonials are usually short interviews or 'pieces to camera'. These 'Vox pops' or 'soundbites' from customers are a great way to promote products or services with impact and authenticity. They are more engaging than written testimonials because they bring the statement to life. They are more convincing too, because you can hear and see the person behind the words.

With our directing and coaching skills we can elicit genuine, positive testimonials in a natural and sensitive manner. Whether it's a series of 10 second soundbites or 20 minute interviews we have filmed subjects ranging from school children to 'C' suite executives. Whether it's an inner-city street or a busy conference we can ensure a natural process with professional results.

If your website isn't live we can start capturing the footage so it's ready in advance. Even if you don't plan to have a website we can still deliver content through online video platforms using our video marketing services.

Trailers

What are trailers in media production?

A trailer is a short marketing video to promote a piece of media, usually a film, TV programme, video game or book.

Where does the term 'trailer' originate from?

Originally trailers were played after the main feature in a cinema in order to promote new films to the audience before they were released. When advertisers realised the audience often left before viewing trailers they switched them to before the main event (like a warm up band playing before the headline act at a music gig) but by then the name ‘trailer’ had stuck.

What is the purpose of a trailer?

Trailers are intended to encourage audiences to watch, read or listen to another piece of related or relevant content.

How do trailers work?

A trailer works when the audience feels the desire to consume the main content directly or wait in anticipation for its release. This is why they are also known as 'teasers'.

How are trailers made?

Trailers are usually made by sampling and shortening the original content, this is a standard method for editing movie trailers. If this approach is not directly possible - like with a book - then a summary or abstract of the content may be presented, often by the author.

What makes a good trailer?

If the purpose is promotion then we want to arouse enough curiosity in the audience that they feel compelled to act by consuming the main content. Successful trailers cause a buzz in the audience, resulting in positive word-of-mouth and more people consuming the content when it comes out.

What makes a bad trailer?

Trailers fail if they do not arouse enough curiosity in the audience and they therefore do not feel compelled to consume the main content. There are many mistakes that can hold a trailer back, with some extreme examples including showing too little (a single scene) or too much (compressing the entire story).

What are the main elements of a trailer?

Usually trailers include a short preview of some of the main content before a 'Call To Action' which informs the viewer where to watch, read or listen to the main content. They may include narration, text, graphics and transitions between scenes.

  • Motion graphics (Animated logos)
  • Narration (Voice Over)
  • Text (On Screen Titles)
  • Transitions (effects between scenes)

How to make a good trailer:

Arouse curiosity in the audience by allowing them to sample enough of the main content without giving away too much. Avoid going into too much detail (losing focus) or revealing the plot (spoiling the surprise).

Sound Motive have produced trailers for books and events - but no spoilers!
